How often should I practice?
Practice is one of the most important parts of learning to play a musical instrument. You should try and dedicate as much of your spare time as you can everyday to achieve your goals. Set realistic targets and try to put in at least half an hour per day.
What age can my children start learning from?
I normally start teaching children at the age of 5 or 6. A lot of practice is needed to learn how to play an instrument, and children under this age struggle to commit the time and dedication that's required.
Are there any guitar examinations I can take?
Yes! They are run by the LCM (London College Of Music) They are internationally recognised, and the most constructed way of learning to play. You can sit exams in Acoustic, Bass, Classical, Electric, Rock and Jazz guitar playing, piano, drums and ukulele.
How many lessons should I have per week?
You should have no more than one lesson per week. 30 minutes or an hour is more than enough as long as you practice the material given in a structured way. Practice is one of the most essential parts of your learning, Without it you will not progress.
How often should I change my guitar strings?
The more you play your guitar, the more often you'll need to replace your strings. I change my strings every six to eight weeks and I play for around four to five hours per day on various guitars. You probably won't notice the difference until you change them, strings normally loose their tone together so you'll be under the impression they sound ok. It’s not until a student snaps a string and replaces one that they notice the difference.
Am I too old to start to learn?
You're never too old to start learning how to play a musical instrument. I currently have a couple of students in their 70's. The oldest person I have taught was 83! Music is amazing in many ways and assisting the brain to stay active is just one of them.
